DGON

The German Institute of Navigation

The German Institute of Navigation (DGON) is a non profit making organisation of public interest. The institute was founded in 1951. Its main objectives are:
- assistance of scientific activities related to navigation and position finding,
- support of research & development activities,
- provision of opportunities to present and introduce new applications in the field of navigation, localisation and positioning, in order to advance and to offer practicable contributions for improving safety and economy of maritime, air, land, space and inland waterway traffic and adherent means of communication, including telematic, radar, transponder, gyro and robotic engineering.

Specialists and parties interested from state agencies, universities, scientific and research organisations, industry, users, politics and the private sector collaborate with DGON in order to assist the institute in attaining its future-oriented goals, closely related to the demands of the entire technological and scientific world of navigation and position finding.

Furthermore, DGON compiles expert advice, evaluations and recommendations on a broad and neutral basis, and, as an absolute independent platform for interdisciplinary harmonisation processes, it offers competent information and serves as a well accepted forum to exchange opinions and experience.

DGON members with rights to vote are Corporate Members and Personal Members. The main decisive body of DGON is its General Assembly, which holds a regular session once a year. Decisions may not be taken against the majority of votes of our corporate members.

DGON is headed and represented by a Board of Directors consisting of five persons, elected for four years by the General Assembly. The Board of Directors elects the President of DGON's Board of Directors, vulgo the President of DGON, who legally represents the Institute.

DGON's body for strategic problems is the Council, assisting and advising directly the Board of Directors. The Council's President is member of the Board of Directors.

The main body for planning and co-ordinating all operational activities (especially technological and scientific national and international symposiums) is the Scientific Advisory Board. To assist the Scientific Advisory Board, special Commissions (committees) have been formed to consider particular traffic requirements (especially in DGON's symposium and publication activities), to collect, to process and to submit branch related information, to initiate and to assist re-evaluation and improvement processes of already existing systems, to evaluate and improve system procedures, respectively.

These special Commissions are:
- The Maritime Traffic and Navigation Commission
- The Air Traffic and General Aviation Navigation Commission
- The Terrestrial Traffic and Land Vehicle Navigation Commission
- The Radar Technology Commission
- The Gyro Technology Commission
- The Satellite Navigation Commission
- The Traffic Telematic Technology Commission

In addition we establish ad-hoc Working Groups on special problems which might arise.

The president of the Scientific Advisory Board is member of the Board of Directors.

The President of the Board of Directors directs DGON's central office, headed by the Managing Director. The office deals with all aspects of DGON's administration, financial management and membership questions. In particular the office is responsible for the realisation and co-ordination of all activities related to the planning and conduct of symposia and for the press and publication work of the Institute. Furthermore, it handles all aspects of DGON's general liaison and library service, and administers DGON's formal distinctions and awards (e.g. Leo-Brandt and Wolfgang Martini).

There are many advantages for being a DGON member. Mainly, members benefit constantly from our special membership service, from all our price reductions and from receiving our special reports, as well as the periodical "Ortung und Navigation". In addition, each member benefits directly or indirectly from DGON's rather large liaison net of persons, firms, state agencies, scientific institutions and foreign Navigation Institutes, e.g. EUGIN, I.A.I.N.. Last but not least, members benefit from the fact, that they can actively contribute to the fulfilment of DGON's important objectives of improving persistently traffic safety and traffic economy.
