Introduction
The development of a performance based navigation manual (PBN) created by ICAO started a new era for enhanced navigation of aviation. Utilizing the capabilities of state-of-the-art systems and technologies, precision approach and performance based navigation capabilities especially in terminal areas are strongly enhanced.
While ILS is still the dominating system for precision approach, MLS is also in operational use or even newly implemented. GBAS undergoes operational testing and certification, whereas SBAS (EGNOS, WAAS, MSAS etc.) is in operational use or in the middle of its in-orbit validation (IOV) phase.
Galileo is on its way to implementation, and standards as well as regulation definitions at ITU, ICAO and IMO etc. are commencing.
The German Institute of Navigation (DGON) is planning its 4th International Symposium ISPA 2008 in Bonn to provide a forum for presentations and discussions. As a complement, there will be an exhibition where industry as well as research organisations are invited to present their state-of-the-art systems and equipment.
